Carpenter Ants
Pest ID
Size: up to 1 inch
Colour: reddish-brown to black
Description: 3 parts to their body: head, thorax and abdomen. 6 legs
Carpenter ants nest within wet wood such as porches and roofs and will eat almost anything from dead bugs to sugar, meat or pet food. They are experts as finding their way into homes through small cracks and crevices and use their powerful jaws to chew through wood, creating tunnels and nests throughout the wood. While rare, carpenter ants can bite humans, which burns because of their acidic acid.
It is always best to professionally treat for carpenter ants at first sight of them. If left, over time they can do significant damage to the structure of the wood they are nesting in, causing degradation and rotting.
